What is EMDR?

When we experience trauma, it’s believed that the memory of that event is stored in the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for emotions and feelings. Traditional talk psychotherapy, however, mostly engages the left hemisphere, which is logical and analytical. This can make processing traumatic experiences slow and challenging.

EMDR is different. It works by stimulating both sides of the brain—something called bilateral stimulation. This is similar to what happens during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep, where the brain processes emotions while also engaging in logical thinking. Through methods like eye movements, hand tapping, or sounds through headphones, EMDR helps integrate the emotional and logical aspects of the brain, allowing the traumatic experience to be processed in a less distressing way.

When is EMDR Psychotherapy Used?

EMDR can be incredibly effective for a range of issues, including:
Panic attacks

  • Dissociative disorders
  • Complicated grief
  • Disturbing memories and flashbacks
  • Anxiety and phobias
  • Performance anxiety
  • Stress reduction
  • Addictions
  • Trauma related to physical or sexual abuse

It’s also widely used by the U.S. Military to support veterans in overcoming trauma. Dr. Asif Khan is fully trained through the EMDR International Association and is a qualified practitioner ready to help you.

How Can EMDR Help You?

EMDR can be integrated into your existing talk psychotherapy, or it can be used as a standalone treatment. It’s flexible and can complement your current psychotherapy plan or work independently to help you heal from trauma more quickly.

Our psychotherapy Process

Getting started with EMDR psychotherapy is simple. Just give us a call to schedule your first appointment. We’ll connect you with a therapist who’s the best match for your needs and goals.

Your initial session is a chance to get to know your therapist, share your story, and discuss why you’re seeking psychotherapy. It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions about the process, confidentiality, and what to expect moving forward.

If you decide to continue after the first session, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments. During your second session, we’ll work together to create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your unique personality, needs, and cultural background.

To take the next step toward healing, call Dr. Asif at +1 630 774 8316 or Dr. Yasmeen at +1 630 674 1138 We’re here to support you.

The Benefits of EMDR psychotherapy

Although we don’t yet fully understand exactly how EMDR works, what we do know is this: traumatic memories can get “stuck” in the brain as a way of protecting us. However, when these memories are triggered, they can feel like we’re re-living the trauma all over again.

EMDR helps reintegrate these traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge. After EMDR psychotherapy, even when traumatic memories are triggered, they no longer carry the same intense emotional reaction. The memories are still there, but the pain and distress are significantly minimized or neutralized, allowing you to move forward in a healthier way.

If you’re ready to address the root causes of your trauma and begin healing, EMDR psychotherapy might be the right path for you. Let us help you take that important step.
